Ruby vs Aqua: Two Reincarnations, Two Paths Through Grief

The Doctor and the Patient: Past Lives as Context

Aqua was a doctor in his previous life, trained to approach problems analytically and maintain emotional distance. Ruby was his terminally ill patient, someone who experienced the world primarily through screens and parasocial connections. These past lives inform how each twin processes their mother's death.

Aqua applies clinical detachment to his grief, treating revenge as a surgical procedure. Ruby applies fan devotion to her grief, treating her mother's memory as something sacred that must be preserved through emulation. Neither approach is portrayed as healthy.

Aqua's Path: Revenge as Anesthesia

Aqua's pursuit of his mother's killer gives him purpose but costs him his humanity. He manipulates people, suppresses emotions, and uses the entertainment industry as a weapon. His medical background makes him efficient at dissecting situations but terrible at experiencing them.

Aqua's tragedy is that revenge has become his only connection to his mother. If he solves the mystery and achieves vengeance, he loses the last thing tying him to Ai. His reluctance to reach the truth may be unconscious self-preservation.

Ruby's Path: Idol as Memorial

Ruby's decision to become an idol is both tribute and denial. By recreating Ai's career, she keeps her mother's memory alive but also avoids confronting the reality of Ai's suffering. Ruby sees only the spotlight, not the shadows that killed her mother.

Her arc becomes dangerous when she begins to idealize the very industry that destroyed Ai. Ruby's innocence, carried over from her previous life as a sheltered patient, makes her vulnerable to the same exploitation patterns. The manga creates tension from the reader's awareness that Ruby is walking toward the same cliff Ai fell from.

Where Their Paths Converge

The most powerful moments in Oshi no Ko occur when Aqua and Ruby's separate journeys intersect. Aqua wants to protect Ruby from the truth; Ruby wants to know the truth to honor their mother properly. Their opposing approaches create a sibling dynamic that is both loving and fundamentally incompatible.

The question of who is right, the pragmatic protector or the idealistic seeker, does not have a clean answer. Oshi no Ko suggests that both perspectives are necessary: Aqua's clear-eyed assessment of danger and Ruby's refusal to let fear override love.

Twin Themes: What Aqua and Ruby Represent

On a thematic level, Aqua and Ruby represent the two faces of fandom itself. Aqua is the critic who sees through the performance and understands the machinery. Ruby is the fan who finds genuine joy and meaning in the performance regardless of its artificiality.

Oshi no Ko argues that both perspectives are valid and both are incomplete. Pure criticism without appreciation becomes cynicism. Pure appreciation without awareness becomes naivety. The twins need each other, just as art needs both critical analysis and emotional engagement to be fully understood.
