Tournament of Power: The Arc That Saved Dragon Ball Super

Premise and Stakes

The Tournament of Power's premise is elegantly terrifying: eight universes compete in a battle royale, and losing universes are erased from existence. This raises the stakes beyond any previous Dragon Ball conflict because the threat is not death but complete annihilation of reality.

The 48-minute time limit creates urgency that Dragon Ball traditionally lacks. Every episode counts down toward universal extinction, preventing the pacing problems that plagued earlier arcs.

Character Showcase: Beyond Goku and Vegeta

The Tournament of Power gives screen time to characters who had been sidelined for years. Android 17's strategic fighting and eventual MVP status was a fan-pleasing surprise. Roshi's tactical experience proved valuable against younger, stronger opponents. Frieza's uneasy alliance with the heroes added tension.

The arc proved that Dragon Ball has a deep enough roster to sustain ensemble storytelling, something the franchise had neglected since the Cell Saga.

Jiren: Simplicity as Strength

Jiren is a deliberately simple antagonist: overwhelmingly strong, emotionally closed off, fighting for his universe's survival. Critics call him boring, but his simplicity serves the arc's purpose. He is an obstacle, not a character study. The arc is about Universe 7's teamwork and growth, not about understanding Jiren.

His backstory of losing everyone to a villain and concluding that strength is the only thing that matters provides just enough motivation without overcomplicating a tournament arc.

Animation Quality: Peaks and Valleys

The Tournament of Power contains both the worst and best animation in Dragon Ball Super's run. Early episodes suffer from inconsistent art and stiff action. The final episodes, particularly Goku's Ultra Instinct awakening against Jiren, feature some of the best animation Toei has ever produced.

Episode 130's fluid combat animation, accompanied by an electric soundtrack, became one of the most-watched anime moments in history. The investment in the finale paid off commercially and artistically.

Legacy of the Tournament

The Tournament of Power redeemed Dragon Ball Super after a rocky start. It delivered everything fans want from Dragon Ball: creative fights, team dynamics, emotional moments, and a game-changing transformation. The arc's success ensured Dragon Ball's continued relevance in the modern anime landscape.

More importantly, it demonstrated that Dragon Ball can tell stories beyond 'Goku fights stronger enemy.' The tournament format, universal stakes, and ensemble focus pointed toward a more mature storytelling future for the franchise.
